Where Are All the White CDOs

Luke Visconti’s Ask the White Guy column is a top draw on DiversityInc.com. Visconti, the founder and CEO of DiversityInc, is a nationally recognized leader in diversity management. In his popular column, readers who ask Visconti tough questions about race/culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability and age can expect smart, direct and disarmingly frank answers.

I work in the [Department of Defense]’s premier institute for educating government civilians and all military services on equal opportunity, equal employment opportunity, diversity, and cultural competency. I am a subscriber to DiversityInc magazine and have read many interesting articles about diversity and other related topics. I also have written several articles about diversity and the inclusion of white men in contributions to the diversity work force. As one inclusive “white guy” … I have a question that you might be able to answer: What made DiversityInc exclude white men and women from the cover of their recent magazine If the intent is to show contributions to successful diversity programs by people of color, the cover hit the target, but it certainly excluded successful programs developed by whites.

There was no effort to exclude non-Hispanic white people from the November cover. It was a group of chief diversity executives at companies in our DiversityInc Top 50 Companies list. Of all the companies in our Top 50, I know of only one non-Hispanic white male CDO. He’s a great guybut we’re featuring his company in the January issue (Coca-Cola).

I think there will be more white male CDOs in the future because this subject is attracting more widespread attentionthe present reality reflects first and second generation corporate efforts.
