Video: Buttigieg Claps Back Against Supporter Who Blames Black People for Police Violence

Pete Buttigieg, the South Bend Indiana mayor and 2020 presidential hopeful, was at an Iowa Democratic Party barbecue in Carroll County on Thursday.

While Buttigieg was taking questions, a man named Dave Bagley told Buttigieg that recent trouble between South Bend’s police department and its local Black community would improve if Black people would just “stop committing crime and doing drugs.”

That comment did not go over well. It was immediately met with boos and there’s even a video of the exchange.

“Sir, I think racism is not going to help us get out of this drama,” Buttigieg replied.

But the village idiot could not let it go.

“No, no, just stop committing crimes. It has nothing to do with race,” Bagley said.

Then Buttigieg really let it rip.

“The fact that a Black person is four times as likely as a white person to be incarcerated for the exact same crime is evidence of systemic racism. It is evidence of systemic racism, and with all due respect sir, racism makes it harder for good police officers to do their job too. It is a smear on all law enforcement.

“Sir, when Black people and white people are treated the same by the criminal justice system, it will be easier for white and Black people to live in this country, and it will be easier for law enforcement to do their jobs. So racism has no place in American politics or in American law enforcement.”

The question from Bagley comes after Buttigieg was confronted by protestors when a Black father was fatally shot by an officer responding to reports of a man breaking into cars in downtown South Bend. After a tense back-and-forth, Buttigieg marched with the crowd of protestors to the County-City Building downtown.
