#MeToo Former Boxing Champ Turns Himself in Pending Rape Charges Right Before Big Comeback

Boxer Victor Ortiz faces a plethora of charges including felony rape, forced oral copulation, and digital penetration. He turned himself in on Tuesday.

According to Oxnard Police Cmdr. Luis McArthur, a woman went to a local area hospital and alleged that she was sexually assaulted by professional boxer Victor Ortiz this past March.

McArthur said police and detectives responded to interview the woman and the investigation began.

“Investigators were able to obtain sufficient evidence to obtain an arrest warrant for the charges of felony rape, forced oral copulation, and digital penetration,” he said.

This isn’t the boxer’s first run-in with the law. After a devastating loss to Floyd Mayweather, Ortiz’s career fell into a downward spiral. Ortiz was arrested in July 2015 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after being accused of beating up a fan at a Kenny Chesney concert. He was also arrested in September 2016 after being pulled over with a 0.15 blood alcohol content. This latest arrest is by far the most serious and devastating for the 31-year-old.

The fallen boxer was on the verge of a comeback scoring a fight that would’ve been the main event on Sunday against John Molina in Oxnard, California. A source told ESPN’s Dan Rafael that the event will still go on as scheduled, but Ortiz will not be fighting. Molina then told journalist Steve Kim that the fight is off and that he won’t compete on the card, so it’s safe to assume the co-main event between featherweight contender Brandon Figueroa and Oscar Escandon will be bumped to main event status.
