University of Virginia Men’s Basketball Team, NCAA Champions, Decline Visit to White House

The University of Virginia men’s basketball team recently won this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament, but they won’t be visiting the White House anytime soon.

They declined an invitation to the traditional meeting with the president after a championship win.

Head coach Tony Bennett tweeted:

Winners of the 2018 NCAA men’s tournament, the Villanova Wildcats, also turned down a visit to the White House. In January, college football championship team the Clemson Tigers did meet with President Trump following their win.

Trump said he paid for their meal of “American fast food.”

“We went off and we ordered American fast food, paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza,” he said. “I think they’d like it better than anything we could give.”

It was during the partial government shutdown over Trump’s desired funding for a border wall and the team was seemingly used as props.

“The President wanted to host a fun event to celebrate the College Football National Champion Clemson Tigers, spokesperson Sarah Sanders said, in a statement, at the time. Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed – so the President is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone’s favorite fast foods.”
