University of New Mexico Hospitals: No.10 in The DiversityInc Top 10 Hospitals and Health Systems

WHY IT’S ON THE LIST

University of New Mexico Hospitals is on the Top 10 Hospitals and Health Systems list for the second year in a row. The system’s workforce is unique among the Top 10 in its workforce demographics: 45 percent of employees are Latino, and more than 4 percent are American Indian. Reflective of its demographics, the system’s board has American Indian and Latino representation.

The primary goal of the hospital’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is to identify and address any health disparities in the care patients receive. This is accomplished through mandatory cultural-competence training for the entire staff, including physicians and nurses, and the creation of a Health Literacy Task Force that develops patient-friendly, culturally sensitive communications.

To further ensure that culturally competent care is provided, the hospital system has launched the UNMH LGBT Collaborative, which educates the UNMH community about LGBT health issues and creates an environment that is supportive of LGBT employees, patients, families, friends and allies. It also has a Native American Health Service Office and extensive American Indian interpreter services.

DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP

Steve McKernan

CEO

“UNM Hospitals is a gateway to healthcare in New Mexico. Our mission includes patient care, education and research componentsall tied to the diverse culture our state reflects. Knowing our community is crucial in offering caring and efficient services to our multicultural population, and it also drives how we best provide that care. Understanding how a diverse workforce can help in offering those services is something we continue to learn and develop. At no time in our organization has the ability to connect and care for a diverse population been more critical to our work, and we’re embracing that opportunity every day.”

Jim Pendergast

“In 1954 the federal government decided that Albuquerque needed a Native American hospital59 years later, UNM Hospitals has transitioned from a Native American hospital to a county hospital to the only academic medical center in New Mexico. UNM Hospitals truly reflects the community it serves, as we are a majority minority workforce. Our core values include compassion and respect in our interaction with students, patients and colleagues; and diversity in people and thinking.
