Undocumented Workers at Trump’s Golf Course Fired: Report

The operation of President Trump’s private businesses continues to contradict his public stance on immigration; so undocumented employees at his properties are being fired. A new report claims that one of Trump’s golf courses dismissed about a dozen longtime workers last week at the same time the president continues to push for a border wall.

The Washington Post reported that employees at Trump National Golf Club in Westchester County, N.Y., were let go on Jan. 18. All of those workers were from Latin America and were told that a recent audit of their immigration documents found them to be false.

However, attorney Anibal Romero said on Saturday that managers had known about their legal status for years.

“This is bogus,” Romero said. “People have been there for 12, 13, 14 years.” He added, “One had the keys to Eric Trump’s bedroom.”

Romero said managers knew they had submitted false documents but looked the other way. The workers said “they provided Trump with cheap labor,” according to the Post. “In return, they got steady work and few questions.”

“I started to cry,” Gabriel Sedano, a former maintenance worker from Mexico, told the newspaper. “I told them they needed to consider us. I had worked almost 15 years for them in this club, and I’d given the best of myself to this job.”

When Trump took office two years ago, he turned over day-to-day management of his business to his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric.

Eric Trump said, in a statement: “We are making a broad effort to identify any employee who has given false and fraudulent documents to unlawfully gain employment. Where identified, any individual will be terminated immediately.”

He also said, “my father is fighting so hard for immigration reform. The system is broken.”

During Trump’s campaign in 2016, when he referred to Mexicans as rapists and criminals, he promised to mandate E-Verify, a federal tool to verify employment eligibility, and requested $23 million in his 2019 budget proposal to expand the program for nationwide use.

But Trump National Golf Club in Westchester County does not appear in the government’s list of participants in the E-Verify system.

Last month, at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., workers came forward to say managers there had hired them knowing they were in the country illegally.

Victorina Morales, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, reportedly crossed the border in 1999 and had worked at the golf club, since 2013. Sandra Diaz, 46, from Costa Rica was another.

“We need to come out and defend ourselves,” Morales, 47, said in December. “I had enough with suffering.”
