PwC Senior Tax Manager Works on Goal to Run A Marathon on Every Continent

TraLiza King, a Senior Tax Manager at PwC (Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Hall of Fame), is working on her goal of running a marathon on every continent — with the support of her employer.

“Beyond the fresh air in my lungs and being in a pure positive flow of energy stemming from others and the elements of the universe around you, I enjoy the symbolism of running and all journeys in life,” King said. “You seem to start in a place or common stream with others but based on what you put into your journey outcome is defined one step at a time. It is my time of mental clarity and personal self-talk encouragement, especially if I find myself alone on the course really trying to push past a challenge portion of the course or elements.”

King is a part of multiple African-American running groups as well as the Black Icee Project, who, according to their website, are “a group of 27 African American distance runners from all over the United States to join a quest to run a half marathon or full marathon together in Antarctica January 2020 during the White Continent Marathon.  [We]made history by both conquering the running feat as the largest group of African Americans to do this in Antarctica but to five of the women participating also completed their 7th marathon or half on a 7th continent.”

This was the fourth marathon King has run and her third continent.

She does her own work and runs with the support and encouragement of her employer, PwC. She is also a Digital Accelerator at PwC, which means she takes extra time to learn emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, data cleansing and blockchain, 3D printing, and drones, in order to share her tech expertise with other employees and clients.

PwC says it encourages employees to be involved in diverse activities in and out of the workplace. PwC discovered in a recent study that employees who engage in activities that they enjoy and that challenge them are more likely to report higher levels of happiness and passion for their work along with lower levels of burnout.

King’s life embodies that find. She manages her two young daughters’ busy schedules while living based on her belief that “role modeling flexibility, balance, creativity, career success and spiritual fortitude daily is not optional for those who depend on me, while also focusing on making sure no deadlines are missed and that TraLiza King shows up as the best version of her PwC professional self.”

It’s PwC’s ethics and beliefs as a company that make these outside work accomplishments possible for King and other employees.

“Our Be Well, Work Well focus has allowed me to enrich my participation in the very thing that has saved my life, running. I am able to lead from the front as a Be Well Work Well accountability agent, encouraging others with their goals with walking meetings, breathe breaks, and healthier meal options to bring mental, spiritual, and emotional balance,” King said. “PwC’s focus on flexibility, virtual teaming, and leadership setting the example has made me feel comfortable staying balanced. I am flexible with my teams to make sure they are supported mentally and spiritually and feel recharged through modeling healthy work habits and collectively channeling our attention to what we want to achieve for the day.”
