Tracy Single is 16th Transgender Person Murdered In 2019

Tracy Single is the 16th transgender woman to be murdered in 2019 alone. Single, who was Black and only 22 years old, was found dead in a Memorial City parking lot on July 30, according to the Houston Police Department.

“We are devastated by the loss of Tracy,” Houston Police Department Sergeant Alexa Magnan, who works closely with members of the LGBT community, told local news. “We’re here and we are pursuing every lead in this case to try to bring justice for Tracy… Transgender people are disproportionately affected by violence. Every year it’s consistent. “Transgender women of color all across the country are victimized at much higher rates.”

In Single’s honor, Houston City Hall and several bridges were lit in the trans pride flag colors — blue, pink and white – last week.

“I was hoping to let the trans community specifically know that we see you, that this is your city as well, that you have a place here, that we’re working to make this a city that is safe for you, a place where you can thrive,” said Harrison Guy, the chair of the mayor’s LGBTQ task force.

2019 is on track to be equal to or surpass 2018, when at least 22 transgender people were killed in the U.S.2019 is also following the disturbing trend of the majority of transgender murders being women of color. In 2018, 82 percent of murdered transgender women were of color, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Houston, a city that has seen several transgender murders, is taking steps to better serve their community. All Houston Police Department officers will receive  mandatory training with Equality Texas in 2019.

Texas as a state overall is battling with violence against the LGBTQ community. In Dallas, police have been investigating the murders of two black transgender women, Muhlaysia Booker and Chynal Lindsey, who were murdered earlier this summer.
