TIAA Promotes Corie Pauling to Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer

TIAA, a leading financial services provider, announced the promotion of Corie Pauling to Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. She reports to Sean N. Woodroffe, Chief Human Resources Officer.

In this role, Pauling will oversee the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion strategy and lead an expanded Diversity & Inclusion team which now includes the Enterprise Workforce Planning & Analytics group, enabling TIAA to readily leverage critical workforce and industry data to support its D&I best practices.

“There is no better time for Corie to step into the Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer role as we celebrate our centennial year and embark on our future,” said TIAA President and CEO Roger W. Ferguson, Jr. “She has been a remarkable legal and business advisor for HR over the years, and an instrumental part of the launch and implementation of D&I strategies since 2008. She brings great perspective to this role and will build on our D&I leadership which began when TIAA named the first woman to our board of directors in 1940.”

Pauling brings extensive experience and insight to the position. Previously she worked in TIAA’s Advocacy & Oversight (A&O) department, where she served as Associate General Counsel for over 12 years, providing business-centric legal and HR guidance on major workforce initiatives to several business areas and HR teams, including D&I.

“I’m honored to take on this role within TIAA as we continue to cultivate our commitment to diversity and inclusion across all aspects of our business and to our clients,” said Pauling. “Diversity and inclusion is a strategic priority for TIAA, and I look forward to working with our team to deploy new and innovative approaches that enable inclusive leadership, greater cross-cultural understanding, and drives positive business outcomes.”

Prior to joining TIAA, Pauling was a litigation partner with the international employment law firm Littler Mendelson, P.C. and also the renowned civil rights law firm Ferguson Stein Chambers. She is a former co-chair of the Mecklenburg County Bar’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and she frequently speaks at external programs on emerging D&I strategies and related workforce topics. She is a graduate of Charlotte’s groundbreaking Leadership Development Institute and was named TIAA’s Working Mother of the Year in 2012. An avid runner, she has advocated for community-based D&I impact throughout several civic leadership posts.

Pauling holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering, and a juris doctor (J.D.) law degree from the Northwestern University School of Law. She is also a graduate of Charlotte’s Leadership Development Institute.

She will continue to work from TIAA’s Charlotte office.
