1.4 million Americans identify as transgender, and the number is rapidly growing due to an increase in visibility and social acceptance.
As we celebrated Pride Month – and the recent SCOTUS decision – TIAA is unveiling a new company policy for transgender and gender non-conforming workplace standards designed to provide associates who are transgender, gender non-conforming, or who are considering or are in the process of transitioning, greater protections of their privacy, gender pronoun of choice, restroom accessibility, and the freedom to dress as the gender of their choosing. The new guidelines build on the company’s efforts to ensure that everyone is treated fairly, feels welcome, and has a sense of belonging. The policy will be unveiled internally on June 24 and will take effect immediately.
Unfortunately, we have seen through recent traumatic events what can transpire when systemic intolerance and bias is deeply rooted in a society. Against this backdrop, TIAA’s new policy intends to address the needs of transgender and gender non-conforming associates and to protect the rights and safety of such associates – recognizing that it is critical for everyone to feel fully supported by their employer and be able to be their authentic selves in the workplace.
