Three Men Are Suspected of Killing Joshua Brown, Two Arrested

According to the Associated Press, Dallas police Tuesday identified three suspects in the murder of Joshua Brown. Brown was killed 10 days after he testified against Amber Guyger. He was a key witness in Guyger’s trial which stemmed from the murder of Botham Jean, an unarmed Black man who lived in the same apartment building as both Brown and Guyger.

Dallas police have two of the men, Michael Diaz Mitchell, 32, and his nephew, Jacquerious Mitchell, 20, in custody. Jacquerious Mitchell is in custody at a local Dallas hospital where he is being treated for a gunshot wound. The third man, Thaddeous Charles Green, is still at large.

The three men face capital murder charges. Capital murder is defined as first-degree murder with certain conditions that have to be met to qualify, according to Texas Penal Code Sec. 19.03. The punishment is a minimum life sentence that may or may not include parole.

Though rumors of a retaliatory hit by police swarmed social media and media circles regarding Brown’s death, the murder was triggered by an alleged drug deal gone wrong, according to a press conference held by Dallas Police Assistant Chief Avery Moore.

He said that Michael Diaz Mitchell, Jacquerious Mitchell and Green traveled from Alexandria, La., to purchase drugs from Brown. The deal was initiated by Green, according to a confession from Jacquerious Mitchell. He said that Green and Brown were talking, initially, outside of Green’s vehicle, and then the conversation escalated into an altercation. Mitchell said that Brown started a gunfight and shot him in the chest when he exited the vehicle and that Green returned fire, killing Brown. The other two men drove him to the hospital and left him there.

Mitchell didn’t disclose why they traveled to another state to purchase drugs nor did he disclose how the men met Brown.

Police eventually searched Brown’s apartment where they said they confiscated 12 pounds of marijuana, 143 grams of THC cartridges and $4,000 in cash.

According to documents obtained by WFAA-TV, Brown had previous arrests for drug possession, possession of an illegal firearm and theft.
