VA Failed to Spend Millions of Dollars Available for Suicide Prevention: Report

A $6.2 million media budget was set aside for prevention efforts, but less than 1 percent was used. Each day, about 20 veterans commit suicide.


In the almost two years of the Trump administration, the rate of suicide by veterans soared. Each day, about 20 veterans end their lives. According to a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), there's been mismanagement in the millions allotted for suicide prevention.

The nominee to chair the Department of Veterans Affairs, Robert Wilkie, is a Confederate descendent who defended the actions of bigots such as Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms. A top aide to former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, Wilkie is looking to replace David Shulkin as chair of the VA. His past views have raised some concerns, notably from Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, who thinks he needs to show "he is loyal to veterans and not a partisan agenda."
