Suspect Arrested in Murder of Dallas Transgender Woman Chynal Lindsey

The Dallas Police arrested a 22-year-old man, Ruben Alvarado, for the murder of Chynal Lindsey, a transgender woman who was found dead in a lake on the first day of Pride Month.

Lindsey was found two weeks after yet another transgender woman was discovered dead in the city of Dallas. In that case, police found a video of a group of men assaulting her.

Originally, authorities suspected Lindsey’s death might have been linked to this previous case involving victim Muhlaysia Booker.

According to police, there is no evidence to suggest these cases are related or there is a serial killer involved. In addition to Booker and Lindsey, there have been two additional murders over the past four years. In 2018, the Human Rights Campaign reported 26 transgender people were killed, most of them Black transwomen.

The transgender community has attributed this horrible trend to the gentrification that the city of Dallas has gone through forcing the most popular LGBTQ neighborhood to migrate to the south part of the city. Now they are secluded in a run-down part of the city with no state protections and very little federal protection to show for.

The Trans Pride Initiative, which helps trans people with housing, employment, and incarceration issues, said “these assaults and murders, not just Muhlaysia Booker, but the ones the police have talked about looking back a bit, that could be a direct result of the police presence in Oak Lawn pushing people to more dangerous areas.”
