Sodexo: Women Bring New Perspective, Approach to Solving CTM Challenges

As I think about the many impressive women that I’ve met in our Clinical Technology Management segment, Morgan Ayers-Comegys stands out as someone that doesn’t let anything get in her way of being successful. And she does it with grace because that’s who she is.

We don’t always know where we’re going to end up in our careers, but we learn a lot along the way, and that was clear as Morgan & I spoke about her journey, the challenges and rewards she has experienced.

Morgan is the Director of Capital Planning for Sodexo CTM, and while her role has many responsibilities, overall, she provides analytical and operational support to all CTM clients in the assessment of medical technology and the development of a five-year strategic capital equipment replacement plan. This not only involves an understanding of the CTM business and analytical skills, but it also requires excellent “soft” skills to work with our clients and influence them.

Here’s how she got started and where she plans to go from here:

How did you learn about the Healthcare Technology Management field

MAC: I started out in finance in a healthcare environment for food and environmental services for six months in Charlotte, NC. The CTM group was in the same office, and the person who was the head of Capital Planning asked me to come work for her, so I did. I wanted to know how things worked, and my boss was a great mentor and taught me everything. I then obtained my Master’s in HC Administration.

What challenges or opportunities have you seen women face in CTM

MAC: Working as the mom of young children, I feel fortunate to be in the role that I’m in, but the challenge is having the energy to go back to school to learn more about the interaction between IT, Clinical Engineering and Capital Planning. I believe most women have a natural intuition for reading people, and gauging situations in this industry is a major opportunity because it is so male dominated. There tends to be a very black and white viewpoint, but women bring a new perspective and approach challenges differently.

What long-term career goals are you working toward
MAC: I want to have an impact on the business and to help others better understand what we do. Currently I’m considering whether to take my current role to another level or expand my breadth of experience by becoming a Project Management Professional (PMP). I also do a lot of community work and love to impact people’s lives. The expertise that we gain at work is beneficial to the community.

What advice would you give to others looking to advance in the industry
MAC: Nobody reads anymore, from emails to the news or industry publications. We have to make ourselves better and more informed to be able to educate clients, nurse managers and our partners in the field. —If you’re feeling inspired by Morgan’s journey and looking to grow your own career, the Sodexo CTM business is expanding quickly.
