Ricky Martin Protests Puerto Rico’s Governor: #RickyRenuncia

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló (D) has thousands of people all over the world protesting him after leaked messages between Rosselló and administration officials showed Rosselló using the word “faggot” repeatedly to refer to political rivals. Officials also referred to rivals as with other derogatory terms and implied that they were gay as an insult.

The hateful messages turned to famed singer Ricky Martin. Puerto Rico’s chief financial officer Christian Sobrino wrote that Ricky Martin is gay because he’s sexist.

“Nothing says patriarchal oppression like Ricky Martin,” Sobrino wrote.

He added that “Martin is such a male chauvinist” that he has relationships with men because “women don’t measure up — pure patriarchy.”

It doesn’t stop there.

In a separate discussion, Rosselló wrote, “You’d be doing me a big favor,” in response to Sobrino saying he wanted to “shoot up” San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz. The governor used a sexual slur against ex-New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and attacked journalists.

Martin fired back at Sobrino.

“Do an act of true generosity, value, and love for Puerto Rico and give your position to another person with the wisdom and leadership to guide our future as a people,” Martin tweeted in Spanish.

Martin also joined a mass protest against Roselló, who has so far refused to resign. Sobrino and another official resigned after the emails were leaked.

The protest was right in front of Roselló’s house.

In a video he posted to Instagram, Martin said that he was “tired of the cynicism.”

“They put down women. They put down the LGBT community, people with disabilities. It is insane. We are tired. We can’t take it anymore. Puerto Rico has suffered enough,” Martin said.

The hashtag #RickyRenuncia is trending as pressure increases for the governor to resign.

Instead of denouncing Roselló’s comments about women and LGBTQ people, Trump said the governor was “under siege” and instead turned to attack San Juan’s mayor, who he has feuded with in the past.
