Raytheon Technologies Improves Student Learning in Developing Countries

Raytheon Technologies ranked No. 41 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

Raytheon BBN has launched Cyrus, a software used to process real-time speech. The software has been selected by Pratham for integration into its Oral Reading Fluency tool.

The goal of the integration is to provide support and resources to children in developing countries. The tool will be able to evaluate a child’s reading level, ultimately identifying children who need assistance with reading and comprehension. The tool will also be able to analyze stammering and stuttering.

“When integrated with Cyrus, the ORF tool will be able to reach communities in developing countries that lack internet connectivity and will be easily adaptable, allowing educational institutions and their partners to scale worldwide,” said Stavros Tsakalidis, Lead Scientist at Raytheon BBN. “Cyrus enables data entry, completely on-device, meaning the data is never sent to third parties and most importantly, does not require a network connection. Users may further define ‘grammars’ that specify the allowable voice inputs or phraseology recognized by the system.”

Pratham will deploy the tool across its locations in India and will share the tool through partner organizations in Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
