A 57-year-old Black woman is recovering from surgery to repair a collapsed lung because while exiting a subway in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was punched in the mouth and stabbed by a white man who called her a “Black b–ch” The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the attack as a hate crime.
“He started punching her in her face because she was Black,” a witness at the scene of the crime said.
The woman, identified as Ann Marie Washington, a Flatbush, Brooklyn resident, and mother of two, was attacked Friday evening on her way home from work. Witnesses said a white man appearing to be in his 30s hurled racial slurs at Washington.
“It was unprovoked, she was just minding her business,” Itisha Washington, the victim’s daughter, told PIX11.
“My mom was punched all over her body: back, chest, head, face. She was stabbed by a pointy object. We don’t know what it was. We suspect it could have been an ice pick of some sort.”
It wasn’t until Washington got home that she realized she had been injured, Kenzia Bernard-Nau, a witness and a neighborhood advocate, told NBC 4 New York.
She went to bed thinking she’d just been scratched in the chest, until she woke up the next morning and was in serious condition.
“Her daughter found her and was like we need to take you to a hospital, like, what is going on” Bernard-Nau told CBS New York. “They rushed her to a hospital and that’s when she found out that she was indeed really hurt and her lung collapsed because of it.”
Washington had surgery to repair her collapsed lung. She’s still in the hospital.
During a news conference on Monday at the Church Avenue Q subway station, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams called for the Metropolitan Transit Authority to put a rush on apprehending the man still on the loose.
Overnight, police released a sketch drawn of the man drawn based off a witness description.
Adams also urged police to make the video footage taken by a witness public that shows what happened after the attack, and shows Washington talking to police.
The Anti-Defamation League is offering a reward of $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
“This was a mother who was assaulted for no other reason, based on what we heard, (than) her ethnicity. That is unacceptable in this community,” Adams said.
