In the wake of the well-publicized and, many believe, racially motivated deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Tamir Rice—unarmed Blacks killed by white police officers—President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama shared their own encounters with racism in an interview in the latest issue of People magazine. The story is headlined “The Obamas: How We Deal With Our Own Racist Experiences.”
Before being elected to the White House in 2004, both Obamas had more than their fair share of first-hand encounters with racism.
In excerpts that ran on People.com, Michelle Obama describes her husband as “a Black man that lived on the South Side of Chicago who had his share of troubles catching cabs.”
