‘Pose’ Star Billy Porter to Receive Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Billy Porter is set to receive a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. Porter, who’s originally from Pittsburgh, is a Tony award-winning actor and fashion icon. The talented actor, singer, and activist started in showbiz in 1994 when he portrayed “Teen Angel” in the Broadway revival of Grease. He is one of the stars of Pose, FX’s mega-popular drama that examines the lives of gay and transgender minorities in New York City during the ’80s. The hit show is already scheduled for a third season even though the second season has only aired two episodes.

Porter is one of over thirty honorees slated to receive the honor for 2020.

Billy Porter’s contribution to live theater and live performance is how Hollywood is choosing to recognize the colorful actor. Of the 35 recipients, 13 are Black. Porter, who is 49-years-old, has performed in numerous Broadway productions including Grease, Five Guys Named Moe, Shuffle Along, and Miss Saigon. He is best known for his role as “Lola” in Kinky Boots.

He is honored by the recognition and has up to two years from the June 20 announcement to schedule the formal Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. Billy Porter is currently on top of the world.

He also nabbed this year’s Television Critics Association Awards nomination for individual achievement in a drama for his role as “Pray Tell” on Pose. On the series, he plays the “Granddaddy” to all the “children” who compete in New York’s underground ball scene — a movement started by the Black and Latino LGBTQ community who were shunned by the white LGBTQ community.
