People on the Move: Gina Coleman, New Chief Diversity Officer for PNC Bank

Pittsburgh-based banking giant PNC Bank, which operates 2,945 branches in 27 states, has named Gina Coleman as the company’s new Chief Diversity Officer. Coleman will succeed Marsha Jones, who led PNC’s diversity and inclusion for more than a decade before retiring on Jan. 1, 2022.

Jake Bekemeyer of the Detroit-based business journal DBusiness Magazine reported that “in her new role, Coleman will help develop strategies and programs that allow PNC to build and sustain a talented, diverse workforce while furthering a culture of inclusion. Alongside her role as CDO, she will serve as co-chair of the PNC Corporate Diversity Council to focus on embedding inclusion into every aspect of the organization.”

In a statement announcing Coleman’s appointment, William S. Demchak, chairman, president and CEO of PNC Bank, said, “PNC has long embraced diversity and inclusion as core values, and we are excited to have Gina in this role to be a partner in developing strategies that allow us to recruit, retain and advance diverse talent at PNC.”

Demchak added that Coleman would help the company continue its commitment to growing a more diverse customer base by “supporting business initiatives geared toward understanding the unique financial needs of our customers and the communities where our employees live and work.”

Coleman is currently the board chair for the Detroit-based education program Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan, which serves K-12-aged students. She is also a board member with the nonprofit literacy organization Beyond Basics in Southfield, Michigan. Additionally, she is a board member with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation. Coleman earned her bachelor’s degree at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey.

“It is a privilege to lead PNC’s diversity and inclusion efforts, particularly at this important moment in time,” Coleman said in a statement after her appointment. “I do not take this responsibility lightly and understand that I am fortunate to be building on the foundation laid by Marsha Jones. She has led PNC through an inspiring D&I journey from the inception of this role to present day.”

Coleman added that she plans to move PNC’s D&I strategy efforts forward with “clear objectives and increased transparency that assess the impact of our D&I strategy on our colleagues, customers, community members, and shareholders.”
