Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced on Tuesday that the Pentagon would be reviewing the Army’s policies on women’s hairstyles, a month after the new grooming regulations were released and received much criticism for being racially biased against Black female soldiers.
Army Regulation 670-1 includes rules on hairstyles, grooming, tattoos and uniforms. Many Black women in the military felt the rules specifically targeted and affected them as the code specifically included braids, dreadlocks and twists.
