An off-duty NYPD officer Hyun Kim was suspended without pay after he held his gun to a waitress’ head in a boozy Queens karaoke bar incident, according to reports.
The incident occurred Oct. 8, and Kim was charged with menacing Oct. 13.
Kim, a member of the 115th Precinct, was out with his boss, Sgt. Jung Kim, when a waitress at the Flushing, Queens, bar saw his gun and asked him if he was a gangster. He responded saying he was not, that he was a cop, and that he was out with his sergeant, unnamed sources told NBC News.
He then racked the gun — meaning he pulled the slide of his gun back and let it snap forward, chambering a round — and the magazine fell to the ground and bullets scattered on the floor. He did not pick it up.
Kim then allegedly pointed his gun at the waitress, telling her to come over to him and “hang out,” or he’ll shoot her, according to the New York Daily News.
Two of the bar’s waitresses went to the 109th Precinct stationhouse to report Kim, initially believing he was impersonating a cop until the investigation revealed he was one.
Investigators found the magazine Kim dropped at the scene, as well as a video of the incident, and arrested him. He is charged with two counts of menacing.
Kim’s sergeant, Jung Kim, was suspended but not charged criminally.
The New York Daily News reported that the 115th Precinct where the bar is located was also involved in a 2015 NYPD-involved bribery scandal in which nearly two dozen officers were caught accepting money from karaoke bars in return for protection from police raids and drug-use arrests.
