NYC Doctor Apologizes for Being a White Supremacist, Hospital Takes Him Off Duty

Dov Bechhofer, a resident radiologist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y., was identified as a consistent commenter on the blog for Counter-Currents, a white nationalist publishing house.

In an anonymous Medium article, published last week, it was revealed that under the name “Dov,” Bechhofer proclaimed his support for a white-only nation and forcing people of color to be deported, along with voicing his opposition to racial intermarriage. He also spoke positively about the actions of neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Va.

The Bronx, the northernmost borough of New York City, has a population of more than 1 million people of which 56.2 percent are Latino, 43.7 percent Black, 44.9 percent white and 4.5 percent Asian.

Based on the demographics, the majority of patients at Montefiore are Latino.

In his comments, Bechhofer also advocated for “‘tempered’ anti-Semitism,” despite the fact he is Jewish. According to The Forward, his father is a rabbi, who is a leader of the group Orthodox Jews Against Racism and Discrimination.

The doctor has admitted that he is responsible for the racist posts. Bechhofer offered the following apology:

“I am ashamed of the hurtful, unjustifiable words that I posted online that showed callous disregard toward certain minority groups and am deeply sorry for these transgressions,” he wrote to the Associated Press in an email.

“The posts do not reflect how I was raised or how I actually treat others. I will continue to struggle to understand what brought me to write them.”

A spokesperson for Montefiore said that Bechhofer was taken off duty, pending an investigation by the hospital.
