Nike Launches New Hands-Free Sneaker for Individuals with Special Needs

Nike has created a new lace-less, hands-free sneaker ideal for people with a variety of special needs.

According to the company, the Nike GO FlyEase uses a newly developed “smooth motion bi-stable hinge” that allows you to easily slide your foot in and out of the shoe without ever needing to use your hands.

DisabilityScoop’s Shaun Heasley explained how the shoe works: “Building on how a person might kick off a shoe, Nike designers incorporated a bi-stable hinge and a tensioner — which works like a big rubber band,” he said. This allows “the shoe to smoothly open and close, remaining secure in both positions.”

Heasley added that “designers said the product came about to better serve people with disabilities but ultimately could be handy for anyone who’s got their hands full.”

The FlyEase line of shoes began in 2015 after Nike heard from a teenager with cerebral palsy who wanted to live more independently. This newly launched shoe is the first in the line that can be used completely hands-free.

According to the company, the Nike GO FlyEase is available now to a select group of existing Nike members and will be available nationwide later in 2021.
