Nielsen Audio: On The Road To Big Data With Nextradio

As part of Nielsen’s Total Audience strategy for audio, the company is committed to measuring consumer usage of audio across all devices, platforms and distribution paths. While Nielsen currently uses its Portable People Meter (PPM) technology and diary survey to measure broadcast and digital stream consumption of AM/FM stations, the company is always looking for new data sources that provide clients with enhanced market insights and enriched audience listening data.

Nielsen, in collaboration with TagStation, is exploring the use of data from TagStation’s NextRadio app and the opportunities this dataset may provide. The NextRadio app delivers over-the-air FM broadcasts to smartphones and captures precise data of who is listening to a station. Today, NextRadio has more than 16,000 FM stations, is supported by nearly 100 different types of mobile devices and has over 11 million downloads from the Google Play Store.

As Nielsen rapidly works to innovate measurement, including capturing the consumption of audio through digital devices, the insights from NextRadio could serve as a catalyst to integrate the power of big data into the audio ratings currency.

In addition to the evaluation of NextRadio’s data, Nielsen isexploring additional sources of big data, including insights from the company’srecent Gracenote acquisition, which has a vast footprint in over 70 million car infotainment systems. The knowledge gained from these efforts, along with Nielsen’s proprietary software development kit (SDK) technology, will help to deliver more innovative audio measurement products that provide increased stability, more granularity and greater insights.
