NFL and Maroon 5 Cancel Pre-Super Bowl Press Conference Amid Criticism

The National Football League announced that Maroon 5, the band led by singer Adam Levine, scheduled to entertain at the Super Bowl LIII halftime show on Sunday, will not have the traditional pre-show press conference.

There’s speculation that the NFL may be trying to avoid “the tough questions” around the organization’s blackballing of former football player, Colin Kaepernick. Then, there’s also the numerous Black celebrities who turned down the “opportunity” to perform at the upcoming event, in an effort to show “they stood with Kap.”

A tweet from the official NFL communications account stated:

Maroon 5 and the NFL attempted to mitigate the fallout by donating $500,000 to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America as part of “the NFL’s #InspireChange social justice initiative.”

Maybe the inspiration to change should start from within. Keyboardist PJ Morton, from New Orleans said, in a Jan. 18 interview with People Magazine, “I think there are plenty of people a lot of the players, to be honest who support Kap and also do their job for the NFL.”

In lieu of taking the criticism head-on from the public, it appears that the NFL wants to “let the music do the talking.”
