Donald Trump’s recent comments insulting Mexican people by calling them “rapists,” though he assumes “some are good people,” has caused Univision Communications to drop its broadcast of the Miss USA pageant, and NBC to distance itself from one of its top reality stars.
“Univision Communications is ending the company’s business relationship with theMiss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald J.Trump, based on his recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants,” the company said in a statement Thursday. “At Univision we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious valuesand the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country. We will not be airing theMiss USApageanton July 12or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization.”
During his speech announcing his candidacy for president of the United States, Trump took a hard stance on immigration. “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems,” he said. “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
