Sodexo Becomes a Leading Player in Sports & Leisure Globally with Acquisition of Centerplate

This acquisition strengthens Sodexo's position in the North American market and brings the Group's Sports & Leisure business to scale in the region.

Sodexo (No. 6 on the DiversityInc Top 50 Companies list), world leader in Quality of Life services, and Olympus Partners announced Nov. 15 that Sodexo has signed an agreement to acquire Centerplate, Inc. a provider of food and beverage, merchandise and hospitality services at sports facilities, convention centers and entertainment facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Spain, for 675 million US dollars from Olympus Partners.


Tracing its roots to 1929, with executive offices in Stamford, Connecticut, Centerplate, Inc. is the fourth largest operator by revenues in the United States Sports & Leisure market, the largest market globally. Centerplate serves stadiums and arenas, annually hosting more than 116 million guests across its portfolio of premier venues for marquee events, including 14 Super Bowls, 36 U.S. Presidential Inaugural Balls, All-Star and Championship games for professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, collegiate athletics, and many of North America's largest conventions. Centerplate's last twelve month revenues to June 2017 were 998 million US dollars. For reference, Sodexo's Fiscal Year 2016 revenues for the Sports & Leisure segment were 903 million euro.

This acquisition substantially strengthens Sodexo's position in the North American market, and brings the Group's Sports & Leisure business to scale in the region.  In the UK, the acquisition supports Sodexo's strategy to grow its stadia and cultural destination portfolio. The acquisition also positions Sodexo as a leading player in Sports & Leisure globally, more than doubling its footprint.

The combined entity will benefit from significant synergies gradually ramping-up from the first year. The acquisition is expected to be mildly accretive to earnings from Fiscal 2018.

Chris Verros, CEO of Centerplate, will lead the new combined business in the United States. Centerplate's European operations will be integrated into Sodexo's existing Sports & Leisure business in the region.

The acquisition is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to be closed by end-2017.

Inspiring Women to Consider STEM Careers at Sodexo

While women have fought to win the rights that we have today, the battle is not over, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), where women are still significantly underrepresented.

Candidates who meet me now may not know my background (unless they visit my LinkedIn profile, of course), and while I am currently a Strategic Recruiter for Sodexo's Clinical Technology Management opportunities, I spent around 20 years in the field as a Biomed myself!

From what I've found, many people aren't sure what a Biomed career consists of - or sometimes they don't even realize it exists.

In a nutshell, biomedical equipment technicians, also called biomedical engineers, biomeds or BMETs for short, hold a critical position in filling the gap between medicine and technology. They make it possible for medical staff to use state of the art medical devices, providing the highest level of patient care.

So how did I end up there? In high school, I loved math and science, and it seemed to promise real opportunities for our changing world. This was when I discovered biomedical engineering, which combined my two passions - medicine and fixing things.

Unfortunately, there are some young girls who still grow up thinking that engineering and science aren't meant for women, so it is important to me to show that women can thrive in the world of engineering (or in any career they choose). Because of this, I have chosen to share my personal career path and experiences with the students at my daughter's local high school and with you on this blog.

Today, gender equality and diversity is just as important as ever. Imagine the great advances that could occur in engineering if men and women were working together more often to solve problems. While women have fought to win the rights that we have today, the battle is not over, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), where women are still significantly underrepresented.

In my current role, I have the great opportunity to search the country for Healthcare Technology Management professionals and hope that I can use my position to inspire more women to consider the field from an early age.
