Racially Profiled Latinos to be Paid for Unlawful Detention

Hundreds of Latinos who were racially profiled and detained illegally in Arizona may soon be compensated for every minute they spent in custody.


The federal judge overseeing the racial profiling case against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Tuesday said victims could receive up to $1,500 in restitution for the first hour and an additional $200 for every 20 minutes they were detained.

U.S. District Judge Murray Snow last month found Arpaio and three deputies were in civil contempt for disobeying his orders to stop detaining Latinos based solely on the suspicion that they were in the country illegally.
