Bernard J. Tyson: Kaiser Permanente a Safe Place to Give, Receive Care

We care for the world within Kaiser Permanente (No. 1 on the DiversityInc Top 50 Companies list), inclusive of all people, ethnicities, cultures, faith, religions and gender identity.

As a health care organization that is respected internationally, Kaiser Permanente takes care of millions of people who put their lives in our hands. Our members trust we will keep them healthy or return them to health, while respecting the differences that are fundamental to our strength as a nation.

Our 11 million members — and our employees and physicians — represent the wonderful and rich diversity of our communities across the country. It is this diversity that defines America, a nation built by immigrants who have come here from places around the world to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

You've often heard me talk about speaking up when something must be said. As the leader of an organization with a long and rich history of embracing diversity and inclusion, I am sharing my concern about the Executive Order issued on Friday evening. This action bans people from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States – and prevents America from accepting Syrian refugees. I want to make sure everyone knows Kaiser Permanente remains a place where we embrace everyone. We also will continue to do our part to make sure our communities are healthy, safe and inclusive.

Having visited employees and physicians at Kaiser Permanente facilities throughout the nation, I know we have many immigrants and first generation families who are part of our great organization. What makes Kaiser Permanente special is our people, who bring their rich heritage, languages and passion to provide the best care and coverage to our members. We remain committed to being a safe place that embraces our country's diversity and we have Employee Assistance Program (EAP) resources available and ready to serve you if you are experiencing anxiety or stress.

Kaiser Permanente is dedicated to serving all of our members. In our hospitals, medical offices and other facilities, we will continue to welcome all members with respect for all religions, faiths and countries. In times of uncertainty, we remain a safe place to access high-quality health care. And we have teams who can support members who are experiencing stress that is affecting their mental health and wellness.

Like the rest of the country, we are still determining what the Executive Order and subsequent actions mean. One thing you don't have to worry about is being valued, respected and recognized as an important part of what makes Kaiser Permanente a safe place to give and receive care. Thank you for your commitment to serving our members with the compassionate, high-quality care and service they deserve.

Nurse Posts on Facebook Stephon Clark Deserved to Die, Fired by Kaiser Permanente

The company said Faith Linthicum's comments "do not in any way reflect Kaiser Permanente's views or actions."


Kaiser Permanente (No. 2 on the DiversityInc Top 50 Companies list) has dismissed a nurse at its Roseville Medical Center in California for her Facebook comments about Stephon Clark, an unarmed Black man killed March 18 by police in his grandparents' backyard in Sacramento.

Faith Linthicum of Sacramento, a nurse in labor and delivery, said on Facebook that Clark, 22, "deserved" to get shot by police:

"Yeah but he was running from the police jumping over fences and breaking in peoples houses... why run? He deserved it for being stupid."
