Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Calls Out NFL’s Lack of Diversity

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin is one of the few men of color coaching an NFL team. During an interview with NFL Network last week, he called the league’s lack of diversity a “joke,” CBS Sports reports.

In 2019, Tomlin commented on the issue, noting that despite the Rooney Rule, a NFL policy that requires league teams to interview ethnic-minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation positions, the executive and coaching ranks were not diverse.

“It was a disappointing hiring cycle for someone who watches it like I do, knowing some of the deserving men I do who I thought should have gotten an opportunity and didn’t. But we’ll continue to work and fight for equality and opportunity,” Tomlin said in 2019.

Tomlin is on the executive board of Locksley’s National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches, which was formally announced on Thursday. The nonprofit will create a list of diverse coaches who Tomlin and others will vet and advocate for as openings arise in the pro and college ranks in executive and administrative roles, according to CBS Sports.
