The First Black Woman to Direct a Comic Book Movie: Gina Prince-Bythewood
Gina Prince-Bythewood directed “The Old Guard,” a film adapted for the screen by Greg Rucka from the graphic novels he collaborated on with Leandro Fernandez. This is not Prince-Bythewood’s first film, however it’s the first comic-book movie directed by a Black woman. “I love the fact that it’s this group of warriors from different cultures and backgrounds and sexual orientations and genders who have come together organically to save humanity,” Prince-Bythewood told The Washington Post.
Turnover for Chief Diversity Officers is High
Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) are in high demand now more than ever, but there is also very high turnover due to a lack of resources and actionable advocacy, according to the Wall Street Journal. University of Pennsylvania Hires Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Science hired Camillo Jose Taylor, its first ever Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian. Taylor teaches in the school’s Computer and Information Science department. As dean, Taylor will focus on making pipelines of faculty recruitment more diverse, creating a more inclusive environment overall, and establishing diversity goals and assessment tools.
The U.S. Navy Just Got Its First Black Female Tactical Jet Pilot
Madeline Swegle is officially the U.S. Navy’s first Black female tactical jet pilot in naval aviation’s 110 years. She will be able to fly fighter jets such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter or the EA-18G Growler, CNN reports.
