Broadway’s Scheduled Plays for Spring Include Just Three Black Writers

Next spring on Broadway, scheduled shows include just three black writers, and all of them are jukebox musicals, according to the New York Times. However, there are more than a dozen plays and musicals with Black writers that have yet to make it onto the famed central Broadway stages. “I don’t know how to solve the diversity issue on Broadway,” says playwright Jocelyn Bioh, “other than calling attention to it, and cultivating a generation of producers who are not afraid.”

Presidential Nominee Joe Biden Proposes Plan to Close Racial Economic Gap

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden called for an amendment to the Federal Reserve Act that would require the Federal Reserve to report on racial economic gaps—as well as what solutions the institution is putting into place to close these gaps, the Washington Post reports.

“We need to make bold, practical investments to recover from the economic mess we’re in, and to rebuild for the economic future our country deserves,” Biden said.

Krissah Thompson New Managing Editor for Diversity and Inclusion

Krissah Thompson is the Washington Posts’s new editor for diversity and inclusion, according to a statement from Executive Editor Marty Baron. Thompson has worked for the past three years as the politics assignment editor in the Style section. She will now turn her attention to “ensuring significant, consistent progress on diversity and inclusiveness in everything we do – our coverage of race, ethnicity and identity as well as improved recruitment, retention and career advancement for journalists of color.”

Black Panther Actor Michael B. Jordan Launches #ChangeHollywood

In a collaboration with Color Of Change, an online racial justice organization, Michael B. Jordan is launching a #ChangeHollywood initiative to offer concrete ways to invest in and promote anti-racist content and authentic stories on the Black experience, as well as reinvest police funds into Black communities, USA Today reports.

“This road map is just the beginning of the journey to racial justice. We are all accomplices in the fight to transform Hollywood, and we invite content creators and industry leaders to join us in working together to #ChangeHollywood,” Jordan said in a statement.

New UPenn Wharton Business Dean Says Diversity Has Not Been Prioritized

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the top business schools in the country that as been around for nearly 140 years, has never had a woman or a person of color as its dean, NPR reports.

That just changed with the hiring of Erika James, who was named as Wharton’s 15th dean in February and started in her new position earlier in July.

“I think if we can create social media platforms, if we can put people on the moon and if we can have self-driving cars, there’s very little that we can’t do,” James said during an interview on All Things Considered. “So the fact that we have not yet created a more diverse work environment means that we simply haven’t prioritized it.”
