NEW YORK LIFE FOUNDATION GRANTS $240,000
TO THE CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS INSTITUTE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Foundation Awards More than $560,000 Since 2009
NEW YORK, October 8, 2013 The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) announced today a three year, $240,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation to support the CHCI’s award-winning Public Policy Fellowship Program. The program offers up to 20 recent college graduates of Hispanic descent from across the country the opportunity to complete a nine month paid fellowship and gain real world work experience at the national level in the public policy area of their choice. Fellows can work in international affairs, economic development, education policy, housing, or local government in Washington, D.C.
“Without the New York Life Foundation’s support, deserving Latino students would not have been able to afford the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of spending nine months in Washington, D.C., the center of the world for public policy,” said Esther Aguilera, CHCI president and CEO. “The Fellows are exposed to a well-rounded curriculum that makes an indelible impression on their future careers.”
“While the New York Life Foundation has supported The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute annually since 2009, this three year grant provides longer-term sustainability,” said Marlyn Torres, corporate vice president of the New York Life Foundation. “Continued support for CHCI’s Fellowship Program helps develop a diverse set of future leaders by increasing opportunities for Hispanics to participate in and contribute to the American public policy-making process and shows our commitment to the Latino community.”
Approximately 20 Fellows are selected annually, based on their applications and interview scores. The CHCI Fellowship Program offers Fellows:
- Work Experience With a range of opportunities including jobs in congressional offices, government agencies, and national advocacy organizations.
- Community Service Fellows are required to engage in community service in identified areas of civic interest.
- Leadership and Professional Development A weekly training curriculum that includes workshops and seminars that promote civic engagement, social responsibility, and the value of Hispanic culture.
