Moxy NYC Downtown, located at 26 Ann Street, the latest hotel from Marriott International’s playful, experiential brand Moxy and developer Mark Gordon and Tribeca Associates, celebrated its highly anticipated opening on Wednesday, November 28 with an epic retro party. The night brought together rock royalty host Miles Richie along with names including Slick Woods, The Blonds, Jae Joseph, Ryan Burke, Brett David, Jonte’ Moaning, Crystal Annrod, Alexa Luria, Pierce Cady and Gregory DelliCarpini to introduce guests to Lower Manhattan’s hottest new hotel, which embodies Moxy’s brand ethos of playfulness, spirit and style. DJ sets by Zuri Marley, Ian Mellencamp, Alix Brown and Odalys kept partygoers dancing all night long.

“At a time of exciting change and revitalization in the Financial District, we wanted to celebrate by looking back to the grunge and glamor of Downtown New York of the 70s and 80s, playing homage to the legendary downtown nightclubs and restaurants where the likes of Andy Warhol, Patti Smith and David Bowie went to hang out. It felt like the perfect way to invite the Downtown community of today in to play,” said Toni Stoeckl, Global Brand Leader, Moxy Hotels; and Vice President, Distinctive Select Brands for Marriott International. “The debut of the second Moxy Hotel in NYC gave people a taste of the grit, sexiness and glam of Downtown NY’s 70s and 80s party scenenot to mention the opportunity to get a little ‘rec’ed’ in our modern yet nostalgic space, Recreation.”

Wednesday night’s unforgettable bash evoked wild memories with a nostalgic twist, paying homage to the days of legendary nightclub and restaurant Max’s Kansas City where it wasn’t unusual to walk into Andy Warhol sipping a martini with a Wall Street Banker. In a cheeky nod to the underground music scene of the era, the hotel’s retro-themed third-floor play space that’s part bar and restaurant, part arcade and part basketball court, Recreation, was transformed into a karaoke jam session that featured a live four-piece band. In the pop-up Moxy Salon, OUAI Haircare was on hand to help transform guests’ looks back to the eccentric, gender-bending style of the era. A pop-up boutique from @TheVintageTwin outfitted guests with hand-styled vintage threads including band tees, accessories, jackets and more one-of-a-kind items

“I’ve always wanted to be transported back to the glamor of New York City in the 70s and 80s,” said Miles Richie. “Moxy NYC Downtown’s Coming Out party gave us a glimpse into how New Yorkers played back in the day, creating a vibe where anything goes and everyone is welcome.”

An Instax one-take photo booth inspired by Maripol’s effortlessly stylish one-take photos of infamous 80s personalities, encouraged attendees to strike a pose in front of a backdrop of stacked amps and vintage records for them to keep as a memento or to contribute to the Moxy Yearbook. In typical Moxy fashion a few lucky guests were hooked up with Moxy prizes. Those that sung their heart out at the karaoke, flaunted the best retro look or scored at the Recreation skee ball machine took home some Moxy Hookups such as an Instax Camera, retro tees, OUAI Haircare products and more.

Moxy NYC Downtown’s Coming Out party also celebrated its artist-in-residence, Sophie Barrott, whose work was showcased on Moxy NYC Downtown’s monumental 13-foot x 21-foot state-of-the-art LED Wall which is featured in the dramatic 22-foot atrium of the property. Sophie is one of the chosen artists from the brand’s #BlankCanvas global initiative, which calls on multi-media artists from around the world to submit contemporary works that encapsulate Moxy’s dynamic brand attitude. Her video work incorporates retro-style filters and gritty scenes of urban streets.

The new-build, 30-story, 298-key Moxy Downtown, located just off Broadway and steps away from the World Trade Center, radiates the neighborhood’s eclectic vibe and puts travelers in the heart of the emerging Downtown scene. The new hotel brings a relaxed vibe to the neighborhood with innovative technology, meticulously designed bedrooms, an incredible retro-inspired bar and lounge from Jon Neidich one of the city’s most respected bar and restaurant operators and a prime location in the heart of NYC’s newest 24/7 hub.
