Michelle Obama: ‘What Truly Makes Our Country Great Is Its Diversity’

In response to President Trump’s Twitter attack on four congresswomen, “The Squad,” and the subsequent “send her back” chant of his supporters at a recent North Carolina campaign rally in reference to Rep. Ilhan Omar (who came to the U.S. when she was a child), former First Lady Michelle Obama took to Twitter to rebuke the rhetoric.

Obama shared the following statement with her 13 million followers:

In a recent column, Fair360, formerly DiversityInc CEO Carolynn Johnson addressed Trump’s comments toward Representatives Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib, and Pressley:

“Told to ‘go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came,’ these four women — all of whom are Americans — stood before the world and courageously challenged their bully, who also happens to run the country, is the leader of the free world and resides in what was once lovingly referred to as ‘The People’s White House’ for all U.S. citizens.”

The former first lady has previously addressed the divisiveness that exists under Trump’s leadership. While on tour to discuss her memoir, “Becoming,” in London in April, Obama, who was interviewed by late-night host Stephen Colbert at the O2 Arena compared the U.S. to a broken family.

“We come from a broken family, we are a little unsettled,” she said. “Sometimes, you spend the weekend with divorced dad. That feels like fun, but then you get sick. That is what America is going through. We are living with divorced dad.”

She also took a dig at the Trump administration:

“For anyone who had any problems with Barack Obama, let’s just think about what we were troubled by – there were never any indictments.”

Obama wrote in her memoir that Trump “put her family’s safety at risk with his vehement promotion of the false birther conspiracy theory.”

YouGov’s annual poll released last week, which surveyed 42,000 people in 41 countries, placed Michelle Obama at the top of the list as the “Most Admired Woman in the World,” replacing Angelina Jolie.

The results also showed that on both the U.S. and international lists of admired public figures, the Obamas ranked higher than the Trumps.
