Rep. Mia Love's Aha Moment: Republicans Never Take Minorities Into Their Hearts

Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah) gave a concession speech on Monday after a narrow loss in this month’s midterm election. Love expressed a sentiment of betrayal by her own party, and said President Trump’s vision of the world is “no real relationships, just convenient transactions.”

The day after the midterm elections, Trump reprimanded defeated Republicans, including Love in the mix. Even though her race against Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams remained too close to call, Trump said her campaign distanced itself from his administration, which led to her poor performance.

“Mia Love gave me no love and she lost,”
Trump said. “Too bad. Sorry about that, Mia.”

Love said in her speech that she was surprised by Trump’s response:

“When President Trump took a jab at me because he thought that the race was over, and he lamented that I wouldn’t ask him to come to the state of Utah, I was somewhat surprised at first. But, with every decision I make I have to ask myself, ‘At what cost’

“The president’s behavior towards me made me wonder, ‘What did he have to gain by saying such a thing about a fellow Republican'” she said.

Fair360, formerly DiversityInc CEO Luke Visconti said, “Rep. Love was betrayed by her own party.”

“In her concession speech, she appears to be bewildered by this betrayal,” Visconti explained. “Bewildered and betrayed by the party of ‘good people on both sides’ at Charlottesville, purposeful negligence of hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico and tearing children from parents’ arms at the border. It’s foolish to allow yourself to be betrayed by people like that after they’ve given you clarity on who they are.”

Love continued to expound on her realizations about Trump, in her speech, saying his response to her “gave me a clearer vision of his world as it is.”

She continued, “No real relationships. Just convenient transactions. That is an insufficient way to implement sincere service and policy.”

Love also explained that the Republican Party isn’t serving Black people.

“This election experience and these comments [from Trump] shines a spotlight on the problems Washington politicians have with minorities and Black Americans,” Love continued. “It’s transactional. It’s not personal. Politicians claim they know what’s best for us from a safe distance. Yet, they are never willing to take us home.”

“Because Republicans never take minorities, minority communities into their home and citizens into their homes and into their hearts, they stay with Democrats and bureaucrats in Washington because they do take them home, or at least make them feel like they have a home.” she added.

“I’ve seen the cost to conservatives for not truly taking people into their hearts. Democrats saw newly-elected Black members and women to Congress in this election. This is a matter of fact that Republicans lost in this regard.”

Sometimes hindsight is 20/20.
