Megan Rapinoe Accepts AOC’s Invite to Visit US House of Representatives

It all began when a video of U.S. soccer player Megan Rapinoe was posted by the soccer magazine Eight by Eight of Rapinoe replying to a question asked about going to the White House if the USWNT wins the World Cup.

“I’m not going to the f**king White House,” Rapinoe declared. “We’re not gonna be invited.”

On Thursday, Rapinoe said during a news conference that she stands by her comments. But she did apologize for using an expletive.

The tables have since turned, however. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) extended a Twitter invitation after Friday’s victory, offering to host Rapinoe and the rest of the national team at the House of Representatives.

“It may not be the White House, but we’d be happy to welcome @mPinoe & the entire #USWMNT for a tour of the House of Representatives anytime they’d like,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

And Rapinoe said yes!

Other politicians and the Twittersphere happy joined in.

“.@AOC no doubt the food & the company would be much better. I’ll bring the red velvet cake. @mPinoe your squad in?” Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) tweeted.

President Donald Trump has tried to invite Rapinoe and the team to the White House – directly after scolding Rapinoe for not singing along to the National Anthem during World Cup games. The majority of the U.S. female soccer players are staunchly against going to the White House, including Ali Krieger and Alex Morgan.

“In regards to the ‘President’s’ tweet today, I know women who you cannot control or grope anger you, but I stand by @mPinoe & will sit this one out as well,” Krieger tweeted Wednesday. “I don’t support this administration nor their fight against LGBTQ+ citizens, immigrants & our most vulnerable.”
