Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth Helps Digitize Ukrainian Bakery Business

Mastercard ranked No. 2 on The Fair360, formerly DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list in 2022.

The Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth partnered with CARE for a three-year initiative called Strive Czechia, which aims to help Czech micro and small businesses thrive in the digital economy.

Strive Czechia’s goal is to reach 250,000 businesses, with at least 100,000 women-led or women-owned. The initiative also aims to help at least 10,000 Ukrainian entrepreneurs that were displaced by the war.

“Small businesses have an outsized impact on economies and communities but running a small business is increasingly challenging and complicated,” said Payal Dalal, Senior Vice President of Social Impact at the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. “We need to make sure small businesses have the networks, financing, tools and resources to not only survive but thrive in the digital economy.”

One of the businesses that Strive Czechia impacted is Defidu Bakery, opened in Prague by a Ukrainian mother and daughter duo. Though the two struggled in an industry largely ran by middle-aged men, they were able to gain success with the help of digital tools.

CARE works around the globe to save lives, limit poverty and achieve social justice with a focus on supporting women and girls.
