WHY IT’S ON THE LIST
Mass General is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where nearly all staff physicians serve on the faculty. There is a strong focus on mentoring for faculty, including the URM (Underrepresented Minorities) Faculty Mentoring program, which pairs Black, Latino and Native American medical students with physicians or researchers early in their careers.
The Clinical Leadership Collaborative for Diversity in Nursing program provides two years of mentoring, leadership and professional development for nursing students of color with the goal of hiring graduates at Mass General.
President and CEO Dr. Peter Slavin chairs the hospital’s diversity council and serves as Chief Diversity Officer. Executive compensation is tied to the hospital’s diversity goals; Mass General is one of the few hospital systems to do so.
Slavin oversaw development of the hospital’s Multicultural Affairs Office, which oversees the recruitment, retention and advancement of students, physicians and researchers underrepresented in medicine, as well as the Disparities Solutions Center, headed by Dr. Joseph Betancourt, which provides courses that help healthcare providers and staff interact with patients from different cultures.
