From The Company

Marriott International’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion has always been a business imperative. As we faced incredible challenges due to COVID-19, we recognized that taking a stand to address racial injustice must also be a priority. A holistic strategy was launched, with actions spearheaded by our former president and CEO, Arne Sorenson, who unexpectedly passed away in February 2021. Examples of this strategy include

  • Launching an ongoing global series of virtual TakeCare Community Talks led by our CEO and senior leaders, to share feedback and perspectives on the fight against racism, the advancement of equality and justice in society, and Marriott’s role in these efforts
  • Elevating the focus of our longstanding board of directors-chaired Inclusion and Social Impact Committee, forming subcommittees to further strengthen diversity, equity and inclusion integration across Marriott
  • Announcing the creation of the Arne M. Sorenson Hospitality Fund with the first donation of $1 million in support of the new Marriott-Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership at Howard University, to be established with a $20 million endowment from The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation (a private family foundation)
  • Promoting diverse talent into influential leadership roles, including Marriott International President; Chief Global Officer, Global Operations; President, U.S. and Canada Franchising and Managed Select Brands; and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer

As we move forward, we will honor Arne Sorenson’s humble legacy and his desire to “build on our foundation to ensure a caring, inclusive and results-focused organization.
