Lusher High School Principal Puts Respect For LGBTQ Employees Over Chick-Fila-A ‘Values’

The principal of a high school in New Orleans has made national headlines for his decision to support his staff rather than have free food.

According to WWL-TV, Dr. Steven Corbett, principal of Lusher High School, declined free lunches for the school’s teachers as part of an event that was sponsored by the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation. Chick-Fil-A was the restaurant that would have been donating the food.

Corbett said in a statement to WWL-TV that he declined the food based on the school’s values.

“Out of respect to our LGBTQ staff, we have chosen to not serve Chick-Fil-A at an employee lunch,” Corbett said. “The #1 rule at Lusher is to ‘Be Kind’ and we live this motto every day. Chick-Fil-A has been politically outspoken about its views, and we feel it is not part of Lusher’s culture of kindness and community.”

The dedicated principal of Lusher High School elaborated further on why he chose to forego Chick-Fil-A’s food and find another restaurant that would feed his staff, according to an interview with WDSU.

“We made the decision to support our staff members who are LGBTQ and other supporters,” Corbett said. “We felt that any time an organization is anti-LGBTQ, and has efforts to infringe upon their rights, we thought it was important to support and stand up for their community at this time.”

Chick-Fila-A is a family-owned restaurant chain that prides itself on having “Christian values.” Those values have been used to discriminate against people from the LGBTQ community. According to a story in Eater, Chick-Fil-A has donated massive amounts of money to support organizations that denounce same-sex marriages. The company boasts on its website that its corporate purpose is to “glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-Fil-A.”

In 2012, the restaurant’s CEO Dan Cathy was met with criticism for his incendiary statement, “We support biblical families.”

The self-described “servant-leader” suggested that gay marriages and the families created by those unions aren’t worthy of being treated with dignity and respect because they aren’t “normal families.”

Ironically, Chick-Fil-A’s executive leadership team doesn’t appear to be inclusive of anyone else either nor does its franchise model.
