Hate Group ‘League of the South’ Caught on Video at the Emmett Till Memorial

Members of the white supremacist group “League of the South” were caught on surveillance footage near the Emmett Till Memorial in Sumner, Miss., this weekend filming their own video.

The surveillance footage from a camera behind the memorial and posted to the Sumner Courthouse and Emmett Till Interpretive Center’s Facebook page shows the group holding two different flags typically associated with the “League of the South.”

“We are here at the Emmett Till monument that represents the civil rights movement for Blacks,” one of the men in the video says. “What we want to know is where are all of the white people.”

The group quickly left after an alarm went off near the memorial. The alarm goes off anytime someone visits the site so they know the area is being monitored, the executive director of the Emmett Till Memorial Commission, Patrick Weems, told CNN.

Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy, was tortured and murdered in 1955 by two white men for allegedly flirting with a white woman. The memorial marks the spot where his body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River.

The Emmett Till Memorial has not had peace in several years and was recently made bulletproof after being shot at and vandalized multiple times. It was originally set up in 2007 before being torn down and thrown in the river. Since then, more than 100 rounds have been fired at the sign.

Three white University of Mississippi students posed in front of the sign with guns in a photo posted to one of their private Instagram accounts in March, according to ProPublica. They were suspended from their fraternity in July.

Dave Tell, a historical consultant for the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, told CNN that memorial sites were “becoming where we work out our racial politics.” Instead of being a place to remember an innocent young man of color, it is now a target for hate groups’ statements.
