Imagine a career where everything you do is guided by a clearly defined set of values that everyone shares. Where being mission-focused, or committed to serving others, isn’t even remarkable because it’s simply SOP. In fact, that’s how we operate every day at Johnson & Johnson, and it’s why so many military veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life decide to join our team. Take an inside look at our latest military-connected recruiting efforts, including four organizations we’re partnering with to support you on your career journey.
1. Hiring Our Heroes
Johnson & Johnson is the largest and most broadly based healthcare company in the world, which means you’ll find opportunities to make an impact at scale that you won’t find anywhere else. And for the military-connected community, that size confers some special benefits as well.
How so? For one, it means we offer exceptionally diverse career paths all across the world. After all, with more than 134,000 employees in 60 countries, you’re sure to discover meaningful opportunities to leverage the skills you developed in your military career to make an impact globally—opportunities to innovate, collaborate and lead with purpose and integrity.
For these reasons and more, we’ve recently expanded our longstanding engagement with Hiring Our Heroes, an initiative launched through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to connect the military community—service members, military spouses and veterans—with American businesses in order to create economic opportunities and a stronger, more diverse workforce. The organization helps veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find employment opportunities with business partners like Johnson & Johnson. On our end, we just think it’s a smart way to build relationships with inspiring veterans, share our mission and values with them—and hopefully, connect with future leaders who can help us change the story of health for good.
“Being a leader in the military taught me how to motivate diverse groups of people to work together in high-performing teams.”
2. Heroes Make America
We’re looking to recruit and hire veterans and military spouses across a wide range of functional areas at Johnson & Johnson right now, from supply chain operations to manufacturing, sales and marketing and many more. At the same time, we know that transitioning veterans may have some questions about the hiring process. Questions like:
- What’s the best way for me to highlight my military experience on my resume?
- How can I call out transferrable skills connected to my military experience?
- I’m interested in continuing my education while I work. Does Johnson & Johnson offer tuition reimbursement? (Yes, we do!)
To help transitioning veterans get answers to these questions and more, we’ve teamed up with Heroes MAKE America, an initiative launched by The Manufacturing Institute with the goal of connecting the military community with opportunities in manufacturing. As part of our sponsorship, we’ve been hosting informational virtual hiring events, which are a great way for our recruiters to touch base with candidates, share helpful resources and answer questions. Tune in to a future event if you want to join the conversation and learn more.
As the “Official Healthcare Sponsor” of Heroes MAKE America, we’re incredibly excited by the talent that comes from their manufacturing-focused programming. Plus, you should know that a big part of the initiative is geared toward upskilling, which can be an important component of career-readiness training for the military-connected community. It’s also something you’ll see built into everyday life when you join Johnson & Johnson.
“When I was in the Marine Corps, I put on my uniform every day and never doubted our mission—and I’ve found the same thing with Johnson & Johnson. I never have a day when I wonder if what I’m doing is meaningful, if what I’m doing has a purpose. We’re quite literally trying to cure cancer.”
3. Hire Heroes USA
We celebrate America’s veterans at Johnson & Johnson, and for anyone transitioning back to the civilian workforce, we want to be there to support you every step of the way. So partnering with Hire Heroes USA, an organization committed to setting service members, veterans and their spouses up for success upon returning to the civilian workforce, was a no-brainer.
The rationale behind the organization is a simple one, but it’s something that often gets overlooked. Namely, successfully transitioning back to the civilian workforce from a military career requires support on multiple fronts: career training, resume development, interview coaching, help with job referrals and more.
All of these are areas where Hire Heroes USA continues to step up to make transitioning a little bit easier. We’re just thrilled to be able to do our part.
“Johnson & Johnson gets it right when it comes to treating service members. They talk the talk and walk the walk, from the leadership on down.”
Not familiar with MedTechVets? It’s an organization specifically for transitioning service members and veterans who are pursuing career opportunities with companies in the pharmaceutical, medical device and life sciences industries.
In other words, MedTechVets provides networking and mentorship to individuals interested in roles at companies like ours. The organization helps support those career transitions in a number of ways, including its signature “MedTechVets Academy,” a free all-virtual six-week training program that covers everything from personal branding to resume best practices, networking, interview prep and more.
Of course, MedTechVets is only able to do any of this great work because of its robust network of partners, and we’re proud to be a leader among them.
“Whether you’re doing chemical reactions at a manufacturing site or managing aircraft in Afghanistan, from a leadership standpoint, they’re really not so different. It’s about the team and the vision.”
Why Join The Johnson & Johnson Team?
Beyond these partnerships, we’re extremely proud of our history of supporting military service members at Johnson & Johnson. It’s a tradition that dates back at least to the Spanish-American War in 1898, and one that’s certainly alive and well today. You’ll see that reflected in so many ways, starting at the very top of our organization—Alex Gorsky, our Chairman and CEO, is also a military veteran—and permeating everything we do.
Key differentiators for the military-connected community at Johnson & Johnson include:
- Being named a 2020 Military Times Best for Vets: Employer, a 2020 U.S. Veterans Magazine Top Veteran-Friendly Company and a 2021 Military Friendly® Employer
- Offering an award-winning Employee Resource Group for the military-connected community: the Johnson & Johnson Veterans Leadership Council
