John Singleton in Coma After Major Stroke, Black Directors Show Support on Social Media

Black Hollywood directors are showing support John Singleton who is currently in a coma after suffering a major stroke. Singleton directed classics such as the 1991 film “Boyz n the Hood,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., Ice Cube, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.

Singleton’s family confirmed his stroke on April 17, and the 51-year-old has since been hospitalized. Court documents on behalf of Singleton’s mother, Shelia Wardwere filed on Thursday, according to Deadline:

The papers state that Singleton is currently hospitalized in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs’ or manage his financial resources.’”

Singleton’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

He was the first Black filmmaker nominated for the best director Oscar award for “Boyz n the Hood.” Some of his other iconic films include “Poetic Justice” (1993) starring Janet Jackson and the late Tupac Shakur, “Higher Learning,” (1995) and “Baby Boy” (2001).

Singleton, a native of South Los Angeles, highlighted Black culture during a time when representation was lacking in major Hollywood films. He helped paved the way for current and future Black filmmakers. He’s also director of “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003), a film with a diverse cast.

Singleton’s latest project is “Snowfall,” co-created for the FX Network, was renewed last year for the third season. He was prepared to sign a lucrative settlement agreement on or about April 30, 2019 “at the time of his stroke,” according to the papers filed.

Fellow directors, such as Ava DuVernay, Spike Lee and Jordan Peele are taking to social media to express their feeling toward him:
