Atlanta, GA, July 21, 2011 While college students across the country enjoy the finale of their summer break, INROADS, the nation’s largest non-profit source of salaried corporate internships for diverse students, will mobilize nearly 1,800 Interns and hundreds of Alumni to commit over 10,000 volunteer service hours on July 23rd. The Frank C. Carr National Day of Service will impact over 40 communities with a variety of projects from building homes with Habitat for Humanity, working in food banks feeding the homeless, and picking up trash and debris in some of the country’s most noted cities, to working with kids across America in several mentoring, tutoring and educational programs.

Teaching “Servant Leadership”: This movement, inspired by our founder, Frank C. Carr’s example of servant leadership began over 40 years ago. Carr, who was moved to action by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his historic “I Have a Dream” speech, quit his corporate executive job and established INROADS in 1970 to provide Hispanic, Black and American Indian youth with the skills and real-work experiences necessary to survive and succeed in corporate America. The INROADS process continues to demand academic excellence, and the development of the requisite business skills and competencies to be successful in business, and industry. Community service is equally important to the INROADS Process. College Internships, management training and leadership development are integrated with additional community service requirements (beyond participation in NDS) to encourage youth to lead by example, to give back and contribute as future leaders in their communities. Today, INROADS remains steadfast in its Mission to develop and place talented underserved youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership.

In doing so, they enrich both their companies’ cultures, and their communities’ quality of life.”

Sheena Taylor, INROADS New York/New Jersey Region Intern with TARGET Corporation, shared her thoughts on what service means to her. “Our team of INROADS Staff and Interns spent the day of service last year cleaning up three historic gardens near St. Nicholas Terrace and 141st St. bordering the Manhattan neighborhoods of Hamilton Heights, Manhattanville and Harlem. In each area, people stopped and thanked us for efforts to beautify their neighborhoods. I came away not only touched by their gratitude, but with several realizations: Community service should not be a choice, but an action for which we should all be held accountable as members of the community. Also, I believe success as a leader comes with accepting responsibility; giving back is part of that responsibility.”

INROADS National Day of Service is one of the largest initiatives of its type, and engages students from over 300 colleges and universities nationwide who are Interns with 230 INROADS Corporate and Government Partners. This has become a national movement.
