Humana Supports Homeless Veterans Through 3rd Annual Nationwide Call for Donations

Humana Inc., one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, is inviting people across the country to join them in support of all veterans, especially those who are homeless. People interested in donating gently-used clothing and food items to homeless veterans in their community can drop off donations at one of 25 Humana Guidance Centers across the U.S. through Veterans Day.

The annual clothing drives are grassroots, community-based events designed to help homeless veterans achieve their best health, despite their circumstances. To further veterans’ well-being and to honor their courage, Veterans Day at Humana Guidance Center locations will include celebrations, refreshments and opportunities for veterans to share their experiences.

“Humana is proud to support and celebrate the service of our veterans, and collecting practical items that help those vets who need them most, is an honor and privilege,” said Bruce Broussard, Humana president and CEO.

Humana is partnering with veterans organizations across the country and many of the company’s health plan members and associates are involved in the gathering and donating associated with these efforts.

“We’re excited to partner with communities as we sustain and stand by our veterans, and anything that we can do to acknowledge their service and support their health and well-being is a wonderful opportunity,” said Emily Allen Kirby, national leader for Humana’s Guidance Centers.

Humana, in its unwavering commitment to veterans, has launched several important initiatives in support of the veterans’ community. The organization continues its ongoing efforts to hire an average of 500 veterans and military spouses per year with a focus on hiring veterans with disabilities (wounded warriors). Humana has hired 3,211 veterans and military spouses since 2011, surpassing by over 300% percent a goal it set for itself five years ago.

Humana’s Veteran’s Network Resource Group (NRG) and Strategic Alliances Veterans Channel teams are dedicated to helping veteran’s assimilate into the corporate culture, stay connected to one another, and provide volunteer opportunities that serve their local communities, among other things.

The Humana Strategic Alliances Veteran Channel Team also works with national veteran service organizations and provides consultation and training in veteran healthcare benefits for Humana’s MarketPoint field sales agents and other Humana associates who interact with Humana members or prospects who are veterans, especially where Medicare is concerned. Because of this work, Humana associates are better prepared to provide the healthcare guidance and advice to veterans and their families which they expect and deserve.

At the state and local level, MarketPoint field teams support veterans and their family members through veteran service organizations (VSO) like Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and AMVETS, and participate in or sponsor many events and activities in the community. Humana is the exclusive Medicare Advantage provider for these VSOs.
