Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa who spent nearly three decades in jail for leading the anti-apartheid movement, has died. He was 95.
Born in the tiny village of Mvezo on July 18, 1918, Mandela was expelled from his first college, the segregated University College of Fort Hare, after participating in a boycott over the lack of power held by Blacks in the Student Representative Council. He would return home, only to flee to Johannesburg to avoid an arranged marriage.
