BASF plays a key part in driving solutions to supplement a more sustainable reality and to address the realities of climate change. The company recently updated its climate protection targets and is committing to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Here are some other steps BASF is taking to improve sustainability around the world.
Implementing a Circular Economy
Circular economies encourage reusing, recycling and disposing of waste in an eco-effective manner to prevent the loss of valuable materials.
“Historically, the chemical industry has always been energy and carbon-intensive, but this doesn’t have to be the way forward,” BASF said. “Large strides have been made toward developing better, cleaner chemistry and although there is much yet to be done, we are moving in the right direction.”
Mechanical and chemical are important aspects of the circular economy. BASF leads the industry in the recycling of batteries and aims to process 250,000 metric tons of recycled raw waste globally.
The company also has multiple programs dedicated to managing plastic waste in a more efficient and sustainable way. TrinamiX, a BASF startup, developed the Mobile NIR Spectroscopy Solution, which is used to identify and sort plastics in real time.
BASF’s efforts in sustainability have also helped the automotive industry go green. The company’s Catalysts division supplies multiple components to electric vehicles, from battery components to materials used in charging infrastructures and electric motors.
Companies that participate in a circular economy not only help their own portfolios while lowering their carbon footprints, but also carbon emission reductions among their clients and associated products.
