WHY IT’S ON THE LIST
Henry Ford Health System is the fifth-largest employer in Metro Detroit, serving a city with a population that is over 82 percent Black and nearly 7 percent Latino, as well as including a large population of people of Middle Eastern descent.
The hospital system has seven resource groups, including OPAL (Organization of Physicians, Academicians, and Executive Leaders), which provides professional support and networking for Black physicians, research scientists and leaders. The group’s goals include eliminating health disparities, improving community health, providing mentoring, educating future and current health professionals, and supporting philanthropic efforts.
As part of its Healthcare Equity Campaign, Henry Ford provides mandatory cultural-competency training to its entire workforce, including physicians. The campaign also has a goal of continuously monitoring quality metrics by race, ethnicity and primary language to eliminate disparities.
